Eat Me!
Feb 28 – April 21, 2012

“Soon her eye fell on a little glass box that was lying under the table: she opened it, and found in it a very small cake, on which the words 'EAT ME' were beautifully marked in currants.” Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll

Food informs so much of our daily life, and has long provided a source of inspiration for illustrationartists. If indeed we do we first eat with our eyes, then what better way to explore what food means to us than through art. In Eat Me! artists are invited to explore the world offood – from still life paintings to explorations of our relationships with food as a society. What does food mean to you?

As an extra element to the show, local chefs will be invited to choose a work as an inspiration for a tapas-style dish for a special evening event, Let Them Eat Art! See more about Let Them Eat Art!, which takes place Thursday, April 5, 2012, from 6-9pm at the CAL Gallery.

The Seven Deadly Sins (and the Seven Holy Virtues)
January 10 - February 25, 2012

The Seven Deadly Sins and their counterpart the Seven Holy Virtues have been explored by artists since the early 14th century, perhaps most famously by the 16th century Dutch painter, Hieronymous Bosch. The modern list of sins dates back to Pope Gregory, with their infamy fanned by the poet Dante in his epic ‘Divine Comedy’: luxuria (lust/extravagance); gula (gluttony); avaritia (avarice/greed); acedia (sloth/discouragement); ira (wrath); invidia (envy); and superbia (pride/vanity). But they are balanced in the world by the Holy Virtues of humility, charity, kindness, patience, chastity, temperance, and diligence. For this juried show, artists are invited to delve into the worlds of sin or virtue, take them to the beach, hang out with them in the supermarket aisles, invite them to a bar, or simply see how they behave under a paintbrush, from behind a camera lens or emerging out of a lump of clay.

Give a Gift of Art CAL Members’ Show

November 8, 2011 – January 7, 2012
Opening Reception: Thursday, November 10, 2011

Generally the biggest selling show of the year, Give a Gift of Art encourages people to think of giving art as a gift during the holiday season. This unthemed, unjuried show is open to members of CAL. Work must be for sale and have been completed in the last two years. Artists may enter one work in any medium.

Hint Fiction

August 23 – November 5, 2011

An anthology of 125 short stories, each told in 25 words or fewer, is the inspiration and muse for this juried show. Editor Robert Swartwood’s book Hint Fiction: An Anthology of Stories in 25 words or Fewer (published by W.W.Norton & Company, New York) is a compilation of stories, which each suggest a larger, more complex story.

Artists were invited to choose one of the works in the book, taking the story as the title and inspiration for their work. This is a juried show open to CAL members and non-members.

Copies of the book are available to borrow from the Columbia Art League or for purchase from the University Bookstore or from www.amazon.com.

Red

April 19 – June 18, 2011
Opening Reception: Thursday, April 21, 2011

For synesthetes, color does not occupy just one modality. They may hear in color, associate particular colors with numbers or letters, smell in color. For this show we take a primary color as the theme and invite artists to let it wander through their senses and see what it evokes: an emotion or mood; maybe a perspective; an event or situation; a suggestion; a number, letter or tune; or simply an exploration of the personality and sensuality of red. This was a juried show open to CAL members and non-members.

Based on a True Story

March 1 – April 16, 2011

CAL’s annual tribute to the True/False film festival, Based on a True Story, explores the layers and contrasts of reality and fiction. We live in a world where real life seems to collide on a daily basis with the fictitious world, whether in the realm of news, politics, nature, the media or humanitarian issues. Based on True Story invites artists to re-interpret the everyday world and put their own spin on the world we inhabit. This is a juried show open to CAL members and non-members. Opening Reception: Thursday, January 20, 2011

We are all a combination of selves. Whether through ethnic heritage, dreams and aspirations, our secret self and public persona, family member or inner sprite, the face we present to the world may either reveal or hide our various selves. Hybrid Identity invites artists to weave into a single work either their own worlds of self, or, taking it up to a larger scale, who we are as a nation. This is a juried show open to CAL members and non-members.

House of Cards Show

October 19 - November 20, 2010

House of Cards invited artists to pull a card from a deck of playing cards and then let their imagination run free. The result was a show of 54 playful works, where each artwork represents an artist's creative interpretation of a playing card.

Take the show home!

With the help of ArtSmith Photography (www.artsmithphotography.com) and Miller's Professional Imaging (www.millerslab.com), we've turned the whole show into decks of playing cards, where each artist's work forms the playing face of the card. The perfect holiday season gift! All proceeds from the card-deck sales will benefit CAL's programs. And for Bridge-players there are two different card backs, and a price of $35 for two decks.
